چکیده

The Satellite per Astronomia X (BeppoSAX) is successfully producing small error boxes to gamma-ray bursts, permitting rapid follow-up multiwavelength searches for fading and quiescent counterparts. For GRB 970228 this led to the discovery of the first convincing fading counterpart. However, no counterpart was found for GRB 970111. In this Letter, we present our observations approximately 1 week after GRB 970228 and 1 month after GRB 970111 using the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association (BIMA) array at 3.5 mm. No fading millimeterwave sources were detected, but we demonstrate that BIMA is well suited for performing future searches. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts — radio continuum: general

Gamma-ray Bursts and Neutron-star Mergers

We present the discovery observations for the optical counterpart of the γ-ray burster GRB 970508 and an analysis of its light curve and of the HST imaging data. We also present a detailed analysis of the HST images claimed to show a proper motion of the optical counterpart of GRB 970228 and conclude that, within the uncertainties, there is no proper motion. We examine several aspects of the ne...

Observations and Theoretical Implications of GRB 970228

GRB 970228 is the first gamma ray burst for which prolonged post-burst transient x-ray, optical, and infrared emission has been detected. Recent Hubble Space Telescope observations show that the transient consists of two components: a point source, which is known to be fading, and an extended source, which is possibly fading. I fit standard fireball remnant models to the first month of x-ray, o...

Radio Monitoring of the January 11 , 1997 Gamma - Ray Burst

We report on a comprehensive radio monitoring program of the bright gamma-ray burster GRB 970111. These VLA observations were made at a frequency of 1.4 GHz (λ = 20 cm) and span a range of post-burst timescales between 28 hours and one month. Despite extensive sampling at sub-milliJansky sensitivities, no radio source was detected above 0.5 mJy in the current best error box (∼14 arcmin2) for GR...

Observations of GRB 970228 and GRB 970508, and the Neutron-Star Merger Model

We present the discovery observations for the optical counterpart of the γ-ray burster GRB 970508 and discuss its light curve in the context of the fireball model. We analyze the HST data for this object, and conclude that any underlying galaxy must be fainter than R = 25.5. We also present a detailed analysis of the HST images of GRB 970228 claimed to show a proper motion of the optical counte...

Observations and Theoretical Implications of Gamma Ray Burst 970228 Daniel

Gamma ray burst 970228 is the first GRB for which prolonged post-burst transient x-ray, optical, and infrared emission has been detected. It has two components: a point source, which is known to be fading, and an extended source, which may or may not be fading. Assuming that the point source dominated the emission at all times, its emission is shown to be consistent with that of the remnant of ...
